Building Foundations for a Better Tomorrow %K %X April 2002 CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE                                        David Irwin                          Siripong Malasri Fellow Scientists and Engineers: It is our pleasure to co-host the 4th Annual Memphis Area Engineering and Sciences Conference (MAESC) at Christian Brothers University. This year, we have embraced the broader definition of engineering, i.e., "the science concerned with putting knowledge to practical uses." This is the biggest MAESC conference ever with over 60 technical papers scheduled for presentation. Almost half of the presentations are on biotechnology. As in the past conferences, technical presentations will cut across various aspects of engineering and the sciences, from "Computational Neurodynamics: Studying Brains to Build Brains" to "Genetic Engineering of Defined Animal Models." At the opening, don't miss the opportunity to listen to G. Robert (Bob) Morris, Chairman, Tennessee Governor's Task Force on Biotechnology, on the direction that biotechnology in Tennessee is heading. At lunch, Dr. Robert (Rob) G. Webster, member, US National Academy of Sciences, will speak on "Influenza Bioengineering: A Natural Terrorism Agent." Memphis has the potential to become a nationally recognized "biotech" center. This will be a critical milestone in our local economic development. Together, we can make it happen. We look forward to seeing you at the conference!
